SMALL BEGINNINGS: It all began with a student loan. Etuan van der Westhuizen was a Pretoria University student, working for a local butcher. The owner of the butchery continually complained about the difficulties in finding refrigerated vehicles suitable for carrying meat carcasses.
BIG IDEA: Van der Westhuizen recognised this as a business opportunity and after obtaining his B.Com degree, he bought his first truck. The only problem with this was that he used the money from his student loan to buy the rig. This loan had been granted to pay for the completion of his honours degree.
"In the eyes of my parents, this was not quite the right thing to do," he jokingly remarked. "When I went home and told my parents what I had done, my mother burst into tears. My father insisted I go to the bank the following day and return their money immediately. Fortunately, his grandparents were on his side. They were supportive and offered to pay for the sign writing on his new truck. There was one condition though. Hester (Star) and Anthony (Worthy of Praise), Greyling said they would pay on condition that the sign-writing included the use of their names. This is how the name Hestony Transport was born.
As an owner-driver, it took Van der Westhuizen exactly one year to repay the loan. His first client was his butcher employer (Uitkyk Vleismark Silverton).
Hestony Transport is currently owned by Etuan van der Westhuizen, the Managing Director.
Etuan enjoys close relationships with his clients and remains a full-time, hands on director.
